Biomineralized manganese oxide mediated nitrogen-contained wastewater treatment

In recent years, manganese (Mn) has emerged as an accelerator for nitrogen metabolism. However, the bioactivity of manganese is limited by the restricted contact between microbes and manganese minerals in the solid phase and by the toxicity of manganese to microbes. To enhance the bioactivity of solid-phase manganese, biomineralized manganese oxide (MnOx) modified by Lactobacillus was introduced. Nitrogen removal performance have confirmed the effective role of biomineralized MnOx in accelerating the removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). Metagenomic analysis has confirmed the enhancement of the nitrogen metabolic pathway and microbial extracellular electron transfer (MEET) in biomineralized MnOx treatment group (BIOA group). Additionally, the enrichment of manganese oxidation and denitrification genus indicates a coupling between nitrogen metabolism and manganese metabolism. One point of views is that biomineralized MnOx-mediated nitrogen transformation processes could serve as a substitute for traditional nitrogen removal processes.

Resourceful application and mechanism of oyster shell-microalgae synergistic system：Sustainable treatment of harsh low carbon nitrogen ratio actual wastewater

Microalgal technology holds great promise for both low C/N wastewater treatment and resource recovery simultaneously. Nevertheless, the advancement of microalgal technology is hindered by its reduced nitrogen removal efficiency in low C/N ratio wastewater. In this work, microalgae and waste oyster shells were combined to achieve a total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency of 93.85% at a rate of 2.05 mg L−1 h−1 in low C/N wastewater. Notably, over four cycles of oyster shell reuse, the reactor achieved an average 85% ammonia nitrogen removal extent, with a wastewater treatment cost of only $0.092/ton. Moreover, microbial community analysis during the reuse of oyster shells revealed the critical importance of timely replacement in inhibiting the growth of non-functional bacteria (Poterioochromonas_malhamensi). The work demonstrated that the oyster shell - microalgae system provides a time- and cost-saving, environmental approach for the resourceful treatment of harsh low C/N wastewater.

Enhanced nitrogen removal via partial nitrification/denitrification coupled Anammox using three stage anoxic/oxic biofilm process with intermittent aeration

Pre-capturing organics in municipal wastewater for biogas production, combined with Anammox-based nitrogen removal process, improves the sustainability of sewage treatment. Thus, enhancing nitrogen removal via Anammox in mainstream wastewater treatment becomes very crucial. In present study, a three-stage anoxic/oxic (AO) biofilm process with intermittent aeration was designed to strengthen partial nitrification/denitrification coupling Anammox (PNA/PDA) in treatment of low C/N wastewater, which contained chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 79.8 mg/L and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) of 58.9 mg/L. With a hydraulic retention time of 8.0 h, the process successfully reduced TIN to 10.6 mg/L, achieving a nitrogen removal efficiency of 83.3 %. The 1st anoxic zone accounted for 32.0 % TIN removal, with 10.3 % by denitrification and 21.7 % by PDA, meanwhile, the 2nd and 3rd anoxic zones contributed 19.4 % and 4.5 % of TIN removal, primarily achieved through PDA (including endogenous PD coupling Anammox). The 1st and 2nd intermittent zones accounted for 27.2 % and 17.0 % of TIN removal, respectively, with 13.7 %-21.3 % by PNA and 3.2 %-5.3 % by PDA. Although this process did not pursue nitrite accumulation in any zone (< 1.5 mg-N/L), PNA and PDA accounted for 35.1 % and 52.1 % of TIN removal, respectively. Only 0.21 % of removed TIN was released as nitrous oxide. The AnAOB of Candidatus Brocadia was enriched in each zone, with a relative abundance of 0.66 %-2.29 %. In intermittent zones, NOB had been partially suppressed (AOB/NOB = 0.73–0.88), mainly due to intermittent aeration and effective nitrite utilization by AnAOB since its population size was much greater than NOB. Present study indicated that the three-stage AO biofilm process with intermittent aeration could enhance nitrogen removal via PNA and PDA with a low N2O emission factor.

Greenhouse gas production from an intermittently dosed cold-climate wastewater treatment wetland

This study explores the greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from a two-stage, cold-climate vertical-flow treatment wetland (TW) treating ski area wastewater at 3 °C average water temperature. The system is designed like a modified Ludzack-Ettinger process with the first stage a partially saturated, denitrifying TW followed by an unsaturated nitrifying TW and recycle of nitrified effluent. An intermittent wastewater dosing scheme was established for both stages, with alternating carbon-rich wastewater and nitrate-rich recycle to the first stage. The system has demonstrated effective chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal in high-strength wastewater over seven years of winter operation. Following two closed-loop, intensive GHG winter sampling campaigns at the TW, the magnitude of N2O flux was 2.2 times higher for denitrification than nitrification. CH4 and N2O emissions were strongly correlated with hydraulic loading, whereas CO2 was correlated with surface temperature. GHG fluxes from each stage were related to both microbial activity and off-gassing of dissolved species during wastewater dosing, thus the time of sampling relative to dosing strongly influenced observed fluxes. These results suggest that estimates of GHG fluxes from TWs may be biased if mass transfer and mechanisms of wastewater application are not considered. Emission factors for N2O and CH4 were 0.27 % as kg-N2O-N/kg-TINremoved and 0.04 % kg-CH4-C/kg-CODremoved, respectively. The system had observed seasonal emissions of 600.5 kg CO2 equivalent of GHGs estimated over 130-days of operation. These results indicate a need for wastewater treatment processes to mitigate GHGs.

Effect of phosphorus on the performance of sulfur autotrophic denitrification

Autotrophic denitrification, recognized as a biological denitrification method, has garnered increasing interest in the field of ecological water environment denitrification technology. This study focuses on the utilization of the sulfur autotrophic denitrification process for the deep denitrification treatment of wastewater. Furthermore, it investigates the impact of phosphorus on nitrogen removal efficiency and bacterial community structure of sulfur autotrophic denitrification. In the experiment, a column containing an autotrophic denitrification filter with a carbon-sulfur filler was constructed. This study aimed to examine the impact of phosphorus on the initiation and denitrification efficiency of the autotrophic denitrification filter column. High-throughput sequencing was used to examine alterations in the structure of the bacterial community. The experimental findings indicated that the absence of phosphorus in the influent considerably extended the initiation period of the autotrophic denitrification filter column. The average Total Inorganic Nitrogen (TIN) removal rate was determined to be 80.26%, while the effluent exhibited an accumulation concentration of NO2−-N ranging from 7 to 11 mg/L. After the addition of phosphate, the removal rate of NO3−-N in the autotrophic denitrification process increased to more than 97%, with no2−-N accumulation. As the influent phosphorus concentration increased, the ability of the sulfur autotrophic denitrification filter column to resist hydraulic impact load improved. At a NO3−-N concentration of 30 mg/L and Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) = 2 h, the mean NO3−-N removal rate increased from 73.22% to 81.71%. The concentration of phosphorus affected the quantity and variety of primary bacteria in the sulfur autotrophic denitrification system, as their domination changed from Pseudomonas to Ferritrophicum and Thiobacillus, and from a mixed culture to complete autotrophy.

Partial denitrifying phosphorus removal coupling with anammox (PDPRA) enables synergistic removal of C, N, and P nutrients from municipal wastewater: A year-round pilot-scale evaluation

Applying anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) can unlock significant energy and resource savings. However, its practical implementation encounters significant challenges, particularly due to its limited compatibility with carbon and phosphorus removal processes. This study established a pilot-scale plant featuring a modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) process and operated continuously for 385 days, treating municipal wastewater of 50 m3/d. For the first time, we propose a novel concept of partial denitrifying phosphorus removal coupling with anammox (PDPRA), leveraging denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DPAOs) as NO2− suppliers for anammox. 15N stable isotope tracing revealed that the PDPRA enabled an anammox reaction rate of 6.14 ± 0.18 μmol-N/(L·h), contributing 57.4 % to total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal. Metagenomic sequencing and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing unveiled the co-existence and co-prosperity of anammox bacteria and DPAOs, with Candidatus Brocadia being highly enriched in the anoxic biofilms at a relative abundance of 2.46 ± 0.52 %. Finally, the PDPRA facilitated the synergistic conversion and removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus nutrients, achieving remarkable removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD, 83.5 ± 5.3 %), NH4+ (99.8 ± 0.7 %), TIN (77.1 ± 3.6 %), and PO43− (99.3 ± 1.6 %), even under challenging operational conditions such as low temperature of 11.7 °C. The PDPRA offers a promising solution for reconciling the mainstream anammox and the carbon and phosphorus removal, shedding fresh light on the paradigm shift of MWWTPs in the near future.

Analyzing the nitrogen removal performance and cold adaptation mechanism of immobilized cold-acclimation ANAMMOX granules at low temperatures.

To improve the treatment performance of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) processes at low temperatures, the immobilized cold-acclimation ANAMMOX granules (R3) were prepared and their low-temperature nitrogen removal ability as well as the cold adaptation mechanism were analyzed. The results indicated that the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency of R3 was significantly higher than that of R2 (cold-acclimation granules without immobilization) and R1 (common granules), especially at 11 ± 2 and 7±2°C (68% and 54%). These were attributed to the remarkable biomass retention capacity of R3, high up to 4.3-4.9mg/gVSS even at 5-18°C. Besides, higher protein (PN) content of tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) also facilitated microbial aggregation in R3. Meanwhile, R3 granules retained higher ANAMMOX activity and heme c content at 5-25°C. The original dominant ANAMMOX genus (Candidatus Kuenenia) in R3 kept higher abundance (49%-57%) at 23 ±2 and 16 ±2°C, whereas Candidatus Brocadia became the dominant ANAMMOX genus (25%-32%) in R3 at 11 ±2 and 7±2°C. Notably, different ANAMMOX genera in R3 may adapt to cold environment by regulating the expression of cold-stress proteins (CspA, CspB, PpiD, and UspA). PRACTITIONER POINTS: Immobilized cold-acclimation ANAMMOX granules showed higher nitrogen removal efficiency at 23°C → 5°C. Immobilization method effectively retained biomass (Candidatus Kuenenia and Candidatus Brocadia). Immobilization facilitated TB-EPS release and biological aggregation in cold-acclimation granules. Expression of cold-stress proteins in immobilized cold-acclimation granules was more active.

Decrease in Oxygen Concentration for the Fast Start-Up of Partial Nitritation/Anammox without Inoculum Addition

Initiating the partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) process without inoculation poses a significant challenge. Thus, there is a notable amount of interest in devising a straightforward strategy for the start-up of PN/A. This study demonstrates the feasibility of achieving the rapid start-up of a one-stage PN/A process within a moving-bed sequencing batch biofilm reactor (MBSBBR) by reducing the oxygen concentrations: 3.0 mg O2/L (Stage I), 2.0 mg O2/L (Stage II), and 1.0 mg O2/L (Stage III). The anammox activity was observed 15 days after a gradual decrease in the oxygen concentration and confirmed using a specific anammox activity test (5.9 mg N/gVSS∙h). During Stage III, the average total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency was 60.6%. The relative abundance of planctomycetes, a typical phylum representing anammox microorganisms, increased almost three times from Stage I (2.8%) to Stage III (7.1%). These results demonstrate the potential of a decrease in oxygen concentration for the fast start-up of the one-stage partial nitritation and anammox process without inoculation. The implementation of the studied DO strategy has practical implications for wastewater treatment plant operators, particularly in the start-up of the PN/A processes. Additionally, batch assays allow for the rapid assessment of treatment plant performance, providing real-time insights into its functionality and, thereby, optimizing wastewater treatment practices.

Lumen air pressure regulated multifunctional microbiotas in membrane-aerated biofilm reactors for simultaneous nitrogen removal and antibiotic elimination from aquaculture wastewater

In this study, two membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) were constructed: one solely utilizing biofilm and another hybrid MABR (HMABR) incorporating both suspended-sludge and biofilm to treat low C/N aquaculture wastewater under varying lumen air pressure (LAP). Both HMABR and MABR demonstrated superior nitrogen removal than conventional aeration reactors. Reducing LAP from 10 kPa to 2 kPa could enhance denitrification processes without severely compromising nitrification, resulting in an increase in total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal from 50.2±3.1 % to 71.6±1.0 %. The HMABR exhibited better denitrification efficacy than MABR, underscoring its potential for advanced nitrogen removal applications. A decline in LAP led to decreased extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production, which could potentially augment reactor performance by minimizing mass transfer resistance while maintaining microbial matrix stability and function. Gene-centric metagenomics analysis revealed decreasing LAP impacted nitrogen metabolic potentials and electron flow pathways. The enrichment of napAB at higher LAP and the presence of complete ammonia oxidation (Comammox) Nitrospira at lower LAP indicated aerobic denitrification and Comammox processes in nitrogen removal. Multifunctional microbial communities developed under LAP regulation, diversifying the mechanisms for simultaneous nitrification-denitrification. Increased denitrifying gene pool (narGHI, nirK, norB) and enzymatic activity at a low LAP can amplify denitrification by promoting denitrifying genes and electron flow towards denitrifying enzymes. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was simultaneously removed with efficiency up to 80.2 ± 3.7 %, mainly via biodegradation, while antibiotic resistome and mobilome were propagated. Collectively, these findings could improve our understanding of nitrogen and antibiotic removal mechanisms under LAP regulation, offering valuable insights for the effective design and operation of MABR systems in aquaculture wastewater treatment.

Spatial separation of nitrifiers and denitrifiers promotes selection and enrichment of polyhydroxyalkanoates storing mixed cultures fed by crude glycerol and propionate wastewater

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) recovery from industrial wastewater has been highlighted as a promising strategy for a circular bioeconomy. However, the high and varying level of nitrogen in wastewater makes enrichment of mixed microbial culture (MMC) low efficiency. In this study, spatial separation of nitrifiers and denitrifiers was adopted by adding biocarriers in MMC and decreasing the sludge retention time (SRT) to accelerate the enrichment of PHA-storing MMC fed by mixed wastewater containing glycerol and propionate. Nitrifiers and denitrifiers were sustained on biocarriers, obtaining a high total inorganic nitrogen removal and allowing a more efficient selective pressure of a high carbon and nitrogen ratio (C/N) under low SRT conditions. The maximum PHA cell content and relative abundance of PHA-storing bacteria were increased to 60.51 % (SRT 6 d) and 49.62 % (SRT 6 d) with the decrease of SRT, respectively. This study demonstrates an efficient way to highly enrich PHA-storing MMC from crude glycerol, which provide a relevant technical support for high-efficiency enrichment of PHA-storing bacteria in low C/N wastewater.

Achieving ultra-high nitrogen and phosphorus removal from real municipal wastewater in a novel continuous-flow anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic process via partial nitrification, endogenous denitrification and nitrite-type denitrifying phosphorus removal

Achieving economic and efficient removal of nutrients in mainstream wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) continues to be a challenging research topic. In this study, a continuous-flow anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic system with sludge double recirculation (AOA-SDR), which integrated partial nitrification (PN), endogenous denitrification (ED) and nitrite-type denitrifying phosphorus removal (nDNPR), was constructed to treat real carbon-limited municipal wastewater. The average effluent concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and PO43−-P during the stable operation period were 1.8 and 0.3 mg/L, respectively. PN was achieved with an average nitrite accumulation ratio of 90.4 % by combined strategies. Adequate storage of polyhydroxyalkanoates and glycogen in the anaerobic zone promoted the subsequent nitrogen removal capacity. In the anoxic zone, nitrite served as the main electron acceptor for the denitrifying phosphorus removal process. Mass balance analysis revealed that nDNPR contributed to 23.6 % of TIN removal and 44.7 % of PO43−-P removal. The enrichment of Nitrosomonas (0.45 %) and Ellin 6067 (1.31 %), along with the washout of Nitrospira (0.15 %) provided the bacterial basis for the successful implementation of PN. Other dominant endogenous heterotrophic bacteria, such as Dechlormonas (10.81 %) and Candidatus Accumulibacter (2.96 %), ensured simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance. The successful validation of integrating PN, ED and nDNPR for advanced nutrient removal in the AOA-SDR process provides a transformative technology for WWTPs.

Enhancing biological dissolved organic nitrogen removal in landfill leachate wastewater: The role of sodium acetate co-metabolism

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) comprises approximately 25% of dissolved nitrogen in landfill leachate wastewater (LLW), posing potential risks such as stimulating algal growth and forming disinfection by-products if not treated properly. While DON characterization and removal by physicochemical methods in wastewater treatment systems have been examined, biological strategies for effective DON removal remain less developed. This study explores the influence of sodium acetate addition during denitrification process on LLW DON removal. With sodium acetate addition (Stage I), we achieved 99% ammonia removal, 94% total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal, and 45% DON removal. Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) results suggested the majority of sulfur-containing DON molecules were eliminated in Stage I. Conversely, in the absence of sodium acetate (Stage II), while 99% ammonia removal was maintained, TIN removal dropped to around 10%, and DON concentrations (largely sulfur-containing DON) increased by approximately 22%. Cycle tests revealed similar DON reductions in the aerobic phase across both stages, whereas in the anoxic phase, DON concentrations decreased in Stage I but increased in Stage II. Functional gene prediction indicated higher expression of decarboxylase and deaminase genes in Stage I compared to Stage II. Consequently, this study posits that sodium acetate addition enhances DON removal, potentially via co-metabolism.

Performance and mechanism of pilot-scale carbon fibers enhanced ecological floating beds for urban tail water treatment in optimized ecological floating beds water surface coverage

A pilot-scale carbon fibers enhanced ecological floating beds (CF-EFBs) was constructed. Compared to EFBs without carbon fibers enhancement, CF-EFBs have the better removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD), the removal efficiencies were 3.19, 3.49, and 2.74 times higher than EFBs. Throughout the pilot test (under three different coverage rates), the concentrations of COD, TIN and TP of effluent were 18.11 ± 4.52 mgL−1, 1.95 ± 0.92 mgL−1 and 0.13 ± 0.08 mgL−1. Meanwhile, the average removal of TIN, TP and COD from tailwater was 0.96 gm−2d−1, 0.07 gm−2d−1 and 2.37 gm−2d−1 respectively. When the coverage was 30 %, the CF-EFBs had better nitrogen removal effectiveness (TIN purification ability of 1.49 gm−2d−1). The enrichment of denitrifying bacteria, such as Aridibacter, Nitrospira, Povalibacter, and Phaeodactylibacter increased denitrification efficiency. These results verified the feasibility of CF-EFBs in tailwater treatment at pilot-scale, which was of great significance for the practical application of CF-EFBs.

Feast/famine ratio regulates the succession of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification and autotrophic ammonia oxidizing bacteria in halophilic aerobic granular sludge treating saline wastewater

Heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) shows innovation potential of wastewater treatment process in a single tank. However, how to enrich HN-AD bacteria in activated sludge to enhance their contribution remained unknown. This study explored the impact of the feast/famine (F/F) ratio on the succession of autotrophic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and HN-AD bacteria in a halophilic aerobic granular sludge (HAGS) system. As the F/F ratio decreased from 1/9 to 1/15, the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal performance significantly decreased. The proportion of heterotrophic bacteria was dropped from 79.0 % to 33 %. Accordingly, the relative abundance of Paracoccus decreased from 70.8 % to 25.4 %, and the copy number of the napA gene was reduced from 2.2 × 1010 copies/g HAGS to 8.1 × 109 copies/g HAGS. It found the F/F ratio regulated the population succession of autotrophic AOB and HN-AD bacteria, thereby providing a solution to achieve the enrichment of HN-AD bacteria in HAGS.

Enriched microbial fuel cells; Enhancing anode fillers to purify eutrophic water

Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) play a crucial role in both contaminant removal and energy generation. This study focuses on developing a novel anode material composed of Poly3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3‑hydroxy, activated carbon, pyrite, and sponge iron particles. The aim is to effectively remove various pollutants, including nitrite-nitrogen, ammonium-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, total inorganic nitrogen, algae, chemical oxygen demand and total phosphorus while generating bioelectricity. The MFC design involves connecting the anode carbon felt and cathode wire using externally insulated titanium, along with a fixed resistance. The anaerobic reactor column is filled with different proportions of the four particles. The results show that total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal rates are impressive, with 93 % in Box 2 (B2), 91 % in Box 3 (B3), 86 % in Box 1 (B1), and 66 % in Box 4 (B4). Additionally, the enhanced anode material achieved a high-power output of 959.9 mW/m3 and a current density of 6.989 A/m3. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential of the enriched bio-bed structure for purifying eutrophic water bodies, making it a promising method for contaminant removal and energy generation.

Enhancing nitrogen removal performance through intermittent aeration in continuous plug-flow anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic process treating low-strength municipal sewage

Advanced nitrogen removal cannot be achieved through the conventional biological nitrogen removal process, which requires higher carbon sources and aeration energy. The proposal of intermittent aeration in the aerobic chambers offered an innovative approach to enhance nitrogen removal in low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) municipal sewage, using a plug-flow reactor with anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process. Due to the effective utilization of internal carbon sources through the intermittent aeration, the total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) increased to 77.9 ± 3.2 % with the mean aerobic hydraulic retention time of only 3.2 h and a low C/N of 3.3 during the operation of 210 days. Polyhydroxyalkanoates dominated the nitrogen removal in this AOA system, accounting for 48.0 %, primarily occurring in the alternant aerobic/anoxic chambers. Moreover, the microbial community structure remained unchanged while the NRE increased to 77.9 %. This study provided an efficient and economic strategy for the continuous plug-flow AOA process.

Sulphate reduction, mixed sulphide- and thiosulphate-driven Autotrophic denitrification, NItrification, and Anammox (SANIA) integrated process for sustainable wastewater treatment

This study proposes the Sulphate reduction, mixed sulphide- and thiosulphate-driven Autotrophic denitrification, Nitrification, and Anammox integrated (SANIA) process for sustainable treatment of mainstream wastewater after organics capture. Three moving-bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) were applied for developing sulphate reduction (SR), mixed sulphide- and thiosulphate-driven partial denitrification and Anammox (MSPDA), and NItrification (N), respectively. Typical mainstream wastewater after organics capture (e.g., chemically enhanced primary treatment, CEPT) was synthesized with chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 110 mg/L, sulphate of 50 mg S/L, ammonium of 30 mgN/L. The feasibility of SANIA was investigated with mimic nitrifying effluent supplied in MSPDA-MBBR (Period I), followed by the examination of the applicability of SANIA process with N-MBBR integrated (Period II), under moderate temperatures (25–27 ℃). In Period I, SANIA process was established with both SR- and MSPDA-MBBR continuously operated for over 300 days (no Anammox biomass inoculation). Specifically, in MSPDA-MBBR, high rates of denitratation (2.7 gN/(m2·d)) and Anammox (2.8 gN/(m2·d)) were achieved with Anammox contributing to 81 % of the total inorganic nitrogen removal. In Period II, the integrated SANIA system was continuously operated for over 130 days, achieving up to 90 % of COD, 93 % of ammonium, and 61 % of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal, with effluent concentrations lower than 10 mg COD/L, 3 mg NH4+-N/L, and 13 mg TIN-N/L. The implementation of SANIA can ultimately reduce 75 % and 40 % of organics and aeration energy for biological nitrogen removal. Considering the combination of SANIA with CEPT for carbon capture and sludge digestion/incineration for energy recovery, the new integrated wastewater technology can be a promising strategy for sustainable wastewater treatment.

Effect of free ammonia on partial denitrification: Long-term performance, mechanism, and feasibility of PD/Anammox-FBBR for mature landfill leachate treatment.

As a stable and effective approach for NO2--N accumulation, partial denitrification (PD) could significantly cut down operation cost, and PD/Anammox (PD/A) is a promising nitrogen removal process in wastewater treatment. The biotoxicity of free ammonia (FA) to nitrifying bacteria and anammox bacteria has been demonstrated, while whether FA affects PD bacteria is an open question. Here, long-term operation of PD-fixed bed biofilm reactor (PD-FBBR) treating synthetic wastewater and mature landfill leachate was conducted to reveal the mechanism concerning the effect of FA on PD bacteria. Stable NO2--N accumulation was achieved with NO3--N to NO2--N transformation ratio (NTR) of 60-70% during 280-day operation with FA ranged from 0 to 20.71 ± 0.23 mg/L, while NTR decreased and maintained at ∼30% when FA reached 40.59 ± 0.19 mg/L. Specific NOx--N reduction rate improved at low FA concentration (< 12 mg/L), while high FA level (> 25 mg/L) had inhibitory effect on PD bacteria. Under FA stress, more extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were secreted, and the glnA gene abundance, glutamine synthase concentration, and glutamine concentration in cell and EPS significantly increased, indicating the enhancement of glutamine biosynthesis in PD bacteria for ammonia assimilation played an important role in response to FA stress. Metagenomic sequencing showed that FA stimulated the upregulation of narK (NO3--N/NO2--N antiporter) gene abundance and enhanced uptake of NO3--N and extrusion of NO2--N. Comamonas, unclassified_f__Comamonadaceae and Thauera were highly enriched in biofilm, which played a key role in the stable NO2--N accumulation. Furthermore, a novel two stage PD/A-FBBR was applied to mature landfill leachate treatment, and satisfactory total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency ranged from 81.38 ± 3.56% to 89.16 ± 1.57% was obtained at relatively low COD/NO3--N of 2.57-2.84. Overall, these findings demonstrated how PD bacteria respond to FA stress and confirmed the feasibility of PD/A process in high FA wastewater treatment.

Impact of Influent Composition and Operating Conditions on Carbon and Nitrogen Removal from Urban Wastewater in a Continuous-Upflow (Micro)Aerobic Granular Sludge Blanket Reactor

Aerobic granular sludge is an interesting alternative to the conventional activated sludge (CAS) system and modified-Ludzack–Ettinger (MLE) process for biological wastewater treatment, as it allows a more cost-effective and simultaneous removal of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) compounds in a single stage. In this study, (micro)aerobic C and N removal from synthetic urban wastewater was investigated in a continuous-double-column-upflow aerobic granular sludge blanket (UAGSB) system. The UAGSB reactor was operated under different dissolved oxygen (DO) ranges (0.01–6.00 mg∙L−1), feed C/N ratios (4.7–13.6), and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (6–24 h). At a DO range of 0.01–0.30 mg∙L−1, feed C/N ratio of 13.6, and HRT of 24 h, the UAGSB achieved the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD), N-NH4+, and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiencies of 86, 99, and 84%, respectively. A preliminary assessment of the energy and economic savings associated with the process investigated was also carried out. The impact of capital and operating costs mainly related to the energy consumption of the aeration was taken into account. The assessment reveals that the capital and energy expenses of the UAGSB reactor would result in cost savings of around 14 and 7%, respectively, compared with a MLE system.

Municipal wastewater treatment with limited carbon sources: The significance and advantages of transformation from partial denitrification to partial nitrification coupling with anammox

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) combined with partial nitrification (PN) is expected to achieve energy self-sufficiency in wastewater treatment, while its advantages have not been fully revealed. An anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) system was established to treat low chemical oxygen demand (COD)-total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) (C/N) ratio (3.08) municipal wastewater. Anammox bacteria were enriched from 7 × 106 to 3 × 108 copies/gSS during partial denitrification coupling with anammox (PDA) phase. With the PN achievement, the anammox hotspot zone transformed from the anoxic zone through PDA (37%) to the aerobic zone by partial nitrification coupled with anammox (PNA) (12%). As the nitrite accumulation rate increased to 97%, the TIN removal efficiency and rate increased to 95% and 0.12 kgN/(m3·d). Although anammox performance weakened after this transformation, the carbon sources saved by PN drove more nitrogen removal. PNA was beneficial for advanced and efficient nitrogen removal in carbon-limited wastewater treatment and was less dependent on higher anammox contribution.
